Alana Maiello is an award-winning director, producer, writer, interviewer, and speaker with experience creating documentaries, branded content, commercials, educational content, and behind-the-scenes talent interviews. Alana is passionate about telling deeply nuanced stories that pose challenging questions and create empathy and new perspectives.
Alana is currently directing and producing a feature documentary called Chewed Gum that will address sexual and domestic violence. Winning the Audience Award at the 2018 Oceanside International Film Festival, Alana's short documentary Esfuerzo is an intimate portrait of grape master Armando passing the reins to his grandson in Central California. Esfuerzo toured the festival circuit in 2018, screening at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, the Portland Film Festival, the Napa Valley Film Festival, Festival de Cannes Short Film Corner, and the Enfoque Film Festival in Puerto Rico. Esfuerzo was also an award nominee for Best Documentary and Best Short Film at the New York City Web Fest, and was featured on Univision’s morning show, La Primera Hora.
Alana also works as a supervising producer/production manager and interviewer for behind-the-scenes filming and talent interviews for HBO Max and HBO series. She has worked on BTS and interviews for the following shows: The Idol, Westworld, The Flight Attendant, Insecure, Perry Mason, Barry, The Defiant Ones, Sharp Objects, His Dark Materials, and Elvis Presley: The Searcher.
Alana recently directed and produced two PSAs for the National Immigration Law Center, promoting positive stories advocating for immigrant rights in America, a topic she is very passionate about. In 2021, Alana was a production coordinator on Rory Kennedy’s 2022 Sundance film, DOWNFALL (Netflix). The film follows an investigation into the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people, exploring both the root causes and the human cost. Alana also works as a Supervising Producer at Plastik.
Before transitioning to filmmaking, Alana worked as an equity derivatives operations analyst for Goldman Sachs and a freelance digital marketing consultant. She has consulted with clients including The Killers, and technology companies Grow, Canopy, and Blue Fever.
